First VMware buys Nicira, then Oracle buys Xsigo. What an exciting couple weeks it’s been. These major acquisitions are completely mucking with the established order of the networking and security industries. It’s about time.
Network virtualization has been going on for about 8 years, but it’s been mostly behind the scenes and unless you were in a small group of companies, you could have easily missed it until the rise of network virtualization, OpenFlow, and Software Defined Networking in the last couple years.

VMware Acquires Wanova – an Interesting Twist in Virtual Desktops.
What a difference two years makes! A couple years ago, Wanova was in fundraising mode with Sand Hill VCs. As Cloud & Virtualization EIR for Trinity Ventures, I sat in on a great pitch from Wanova, but left it wondering if Wanova was more Mozy + Acronis. Obviously, either the story wasn’t quite baked, or I didn’t get it. Now less than 2 years later, VMware has acquired Wanova.

Today at Synergy, Citrix announced “Project Olympus,” effectively making open source clouds a more viable option for enterprises. In the past, it was cloud providers like Rackspace who tended to focus on open source cloud infrastructure, while enterprises tended to make more conservative choices where support contracts were available.
