The Cloud Security Alliance recently released a white paper on cloud computing vulnerability incidents spanning the last five years. They looked at more than 11 thousand news articles regarding cloud computing-related incidents to determine the top reasons behind outages. Did you know 64 percent of the outages can be attributed to one of three causes:
Insecure Interfaces & APIs
Data Loss & Leakage
Hardware Failure
If you are developing an application for the cloud or deploying software in the cloud, there is good news: There are some key ways to avoid the majority of outages.
First,...

Ready to purchase your first server and harness its capabilities to benefit your business? A server can be a godsend to SMBs, and with the right tools (like Microsoft’s Windows Server 2012 Essentials) you will enjoy: more control over users and devices, domain control, the ability to directly manage email accounts, scheduling regular backups of critical files and data, and remote access to files and applications.
While it will be great for your business to have an unprecedented level of access, control, and capability that you’ve never had before — thanks to this new server — there...

On a whirlwind tour of Asia, I spoke at several virtual and in-person conferences, including Cloudsec2012. I met with dozens of IT executives responsible for security for cloud infrastructures in Japan and Singapore as well as many other countries in the region. The tour gave me the opportunity to really dig in on cloud security in that area, enough so that I wrote a new report titled The State of Cloud Computing Security in Asia.
This report goes into detail on how the development of cloud computing is impacting the Asia-Pacific region. Specifically, we compare Japan, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia,...

The benefits of the cloud have been proven for businesses of all sizes – every small business owner can save time and money while increasing their employees’ productivity by leveraging cloud technologies. Cloud technologies are faster to deploy, require minimal technical know how to manage, and cost less than on-premise technologies. These benefits let the small business owner focus on what’s most important: growing their business.
But data breaches, social security card theft, credit card number theft, and identity theft: we hear about these things every day. What does the small business...

Birds are beginning to leave their nests and fly south as winter slowly encroaches. The migration of our feathered friends ushers in the new season. As the seasons change so to have the targeted attacks in 2012. The surge of targeted attacks against remote users is exacerbating the Cybersecurity landscape. Remote access compromises are again the primary attack vector employed this year.
The modus operandi of targeting remote user devices to bypass the network security controls has become commonplace. These elite hacker crews applaud our widespread adoption of mobile devices as they fully recognize...

Consumers are understandably hesitant about using applications and storing data in the public cloud. Concerns such as: “Is my data secure?” “Who has access to my data?” “What happens if the public cloud provider suffers a breach?” or “Who is responsible if my data is exposed?” are common as they consider making the journey to the cloud.
Despite an inherent loss of control with cloud computing, the consumer still bears some responsibility for their use of these services.
The Cloud Standards Customer Council published the “Security for Cloud Computing: 10 Steps to Ensure Success”...

Cloud computing, mobile, Advanced Persistent Threats. All are buzz words of the moment in IT and information security circles and yet all are frequently misunderstood and dealt with in silos. It’s become something of a truism to say that the cyber security landscape is constantly morphing. Well, as APTs adapt for the Web 3.0 age, a holistic approach to managing cloud, mobile, cyber and physical security becomes even more fundamental to the success of your information security plans.
Web 3.0 is the next stage of the internet. An internet for the machines where everything with an electric current...

I recently read a blog post outlining how a customer should evaluate where they should store their encryption keys when encrypting data in the cloud. The post outlines the various options for storing keys and concludes, “Enterprises must assess their risk tolerance and audit requirements before they can select a solution that best meets their encryption key management needs.“
I completely agree with the post. Risk tolerance assessments and adherence to audit standards are essential elements of any quality data security program. I would argue though, that if the customer is following...
