PART 2: The Challenges and Benefits of Virtualized Environments for Midsize Businesses: A VMware and Trend Micro Q&A

[NOTE: This Post was continued from Part 1 at VMware SMB Blog] According to Gartner, midsize businesses[1] account for nearly 40 percent of U.S. server sales.[2] Unlike large enterprises, these organizations have fewer resources to support the deployment and maintenance of new servers in existing IT environments. With the goal of optimizing their entire IT infrastructure, midsize businesses are turning to virtualization. No longer limited to enterprises with big IT budgets, virtualization has proven to lower IT costs while improving IT agility. Yet, as midsize organizations embrace virtualization,... read more

A Bright Future for VDI

VDI has come a long way since its origins in 2005 and 2006. When I ran strategic planning for a large virtualization vendor in 2006, analysts declared it to be “the year of VDI.” However, for several years after, it seemed that large scale deployments were always just out of reach for most enterprises because of performance and scale issues. All that has changed. VDI is finally happening at scale across a variety of industries. The early adopters selected VDI because they were concerned about data security. The early VDI solutions originally had a higher operational cost than running desktops.... read more

How much can inefficient patching really cost you? Just ask the Aberdeen Group

Patching costs a ton, regardless of whether you measure the costs in terms of time, lost productivity, or hard costs. Even worse is the cost of bad patching (or god forbid) not patching at all. But all of this money that you spend or even risk more or less represents budget that you could be using for more strategic projects. In a recent report, the Aberdeen Group outlines the real costs of not paying enough attention to patching. But the good news is that they go on to recommend strategies for taking control of patching to avoid all kinds of negative impact. Saving money is good, right? Or, according... read more

Hot from VMworld: Why Security Teams Like VDI

A few months ago I wrote about how the VDI had crossed the tipping point—thanks to significant performance improvements brought on by the pervasiveness of broadband and exponential improvements of new cloud-based technologies. The new widespread use of tablets and smartphones in the workplace added fuel to the fire.  In particular, I mentioned the use of VDI to help solve the BYOD issue. VMware covered these solutions at length at VMworld San Francisco as part of VMware’s Mobile Secure Desktop initiative. Now, as Trend Micro joins to VMware again in Barcelona, we’re seeing this same kind... read more

Software Defined Networking Redefined: VMware Buys Nicira, Oracle Buys Xsigo

First VMware buys Nicira, then Oracle buys Xsigo. What an exciting couple weeks it’s been. These major acquisitions are completely mucking with the established order of the networking and security industries. It’s about time. Network virtualization has been going on for about 8 years, but it’s been mostly behind the scenes and unless you were in a small group of companies, you could have easily missed it until the rise of network virtualization, OpenFlow, and Software Defined Networking in the last couple years. I have been involved with that small group of companies since the start. Here’s... read more

VMware Acquires Wanova – an Interesting Twist in Virtual Desktops

VMware Acquires Wanova – an Interesting Twist in Virtual Desktops. What a difference two years makes! A couple years ago, Wanova was in fundraising mode with Sand Hill VCs. As Cloud & Virtualization EIR for Trinity Ventures, I sat in on a great pitch from Wanova, but left it wondering if Wanova was more Mozy + Acronis. Obviously, either the story wasn’t quite baked, or I didn’t get it. Now less than 2 years later, VMware has acquired Wanova. Here’s my perspective on why this deal sets up fundamental changes in the way virtual desktops will work in the future. This is of... read more

Blog Series Part 2 of 5: 10 Reasons Not to Virtualize

Part 2 of a 5-part series based on my more than a decade of virtualization experience with large enterprises and service providers, and my time running strategic planning for one of the largest 2 virtualization vendors, this blog series covers 10 types of situations when you should consider not virtualizing some of your applications. I. When it just won’t work very well There are some apps that just don’t work well on virtualization for a variety of reasons. VM vendors are getting better are supporting these special cases, and some new technologies like I/O virtualization are coming along... read more

Blog Series Part 1 of 5: 10 Reasons Not to Virtualize

Virtualization and private cloud have enabled server consolidation, created more flexible environments, and saved companies a ton of money. Virtualization is  a good thing. But it’s not always a panacea. Trend Micro’s recent survey of 1200 companies with more than 500 employees showed that 59% had server virtualization in production or pilot. But based on my more than a decade of virtualization experience with large enterprises and service providers, and my time running strategic planning for one of the largest 2 virtualization vendors, this blog series covers 10 types of situations when... read more

Super Fast Flash Storage: One More Step Making the Cloud into a Mainframe

Check out this new release from Greylock Partners, which calls Pure Storage “one of the most exciting enterprise companies in the Greylock Portfolio.” Pure Storage makes a flash based storage array. Greylock is a solid VC – I’ve pitched them on startup ideas a few times over the years. I’m the first to admit that storage arrays might be the most boring part of cloud infrastructure, aside from layer 1 signaling mechanisms maybe. Nonetheless, I’m excited to see this launch. The reason is that I/O for storage is becoming a limiting factor in some cloud infrastructure.... read more

What Are the True Dangers of the Cloud?

We often hear that security and privacy concerns are the main inhibitors to cloud adoption.  But what are the true threats?  Is the cloud really more dangerous than your on-site data center?  I would say that virtualization and cloud computing aren’t inherently more dangerous, but they have unique infrastructure that must be addressed when creating a security foundation.  There are similar attacks across physical, virtual, and cloud infrastructures—data-stealing malware, web threats, spam, phishing, bots, etc. So many companies are tempted to deploy their security for dedicated physical... read more
